Motor Insurance guide

What Is It and Who Is It For?

For owners of cars, bikes and commercial vehicles. Tell YFB the vehicle's use, registration details and existing cover before comparing options.

Third Party

Covers specified legal liability for injury, death or property damage caused to others. It does not pay for damage to your own vehicle.

Standalone Own Damage

Covers insured loss or damage to your vehicle. You must also have valid third-party insurance; own damage alone does not replace it.

Comprehensive

Combines third-party liability and own damage cover. Optional add-ons may extend protection, but exclusions still apply.

What Does It Usually Cover?

  • Third-party liability under the chosen policy.
  • Under own damage cover: insured accident damage, theft and listed risks such as fire or flood.
  • Optional benefits only where the add-on is available and selected.

These are general examples. Benefits, eligibility, limits and exclusions depend on the policy you choose.

Key Terms, Simply Explained

IDV
Insured Declared Value is the agreed value used for total loss or theft cover, subject to policy conditions. It is not a promise to pay that amount for every repair.
NCB
No Claim Bonus is a discount on eligible own damage premium earned through claim-free experience. It is not a discount on the entire premium.
Deductible
The amount you contribute towards an eligible claim. A voluntary deductible is an additional amount you agree to pay.
Zero Depreciation
An optional add-on that reduces depreciation deductions on eligible replaced parts. It does not remove every deduction or exclusion.
Other Add-ons
Roadside assistance, engine protection and consumables cover may be available. Check eligibility, benefit limits and specific conditions for each.

What Should You Check?

  • Compare the same IDV, cover type and add-ons across quotes.
  • Declare previous claims correctly before using NCB.
  • Check vehicle use, modifications and CNG/LPG kit details.
  • Confirm repair garage options, deductibles and add-on restrictions.

Common Limits and Exclusions

  • Wear and tear, routine servicing and ordinary mechanical breakdown.
  • Driving without a valid licence or while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Use outside the policy's permitted purpose, and losses excluded by the wording.

A Simple Example

Comprehensive is different from zero depreciation

Your comprehensive policy may cover accident repairs. Without an applicable zero depreciation add-on, depreciation on replaced parts may be deducted. Even with the add-on, deductibles and non-covered items can remain payable.

Illustrative only. This is not a quote or a promise of claim payment.

Details and Documents to Keep Ready

  • Registration certificate and previous policy, if available.
  • Claim history and vehicle or kit details.
  • For claims: claim form, driving licence, RC, repair estimate and any police report requested.

The insurer may ask for additional information depending on the application or claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is third-party cover required?

Third-party motor insurance is required by law for vehicles used in public places. Own damage cover protects a different risk and does not replace that requirement.

Can I keep NCB when changing insurers?

Eligible NCB may be carried to the new insurer after the claim-free history is verified. Declare claims and policy details accurately.

Does comprehensive cover every loss?

No. Deductibles, exclusions and add-on conditions still apply. Read the cover summary as well as the policy wording.

What should I do after an accident?

Prioritise safety, inform the insurer promptly and follow its claim instructions. Keep photos and relevant documents. YFB can help you organise the paperwork and follow up.
