Travel Insurance guide

What Is It and Who Is It For?

For eligible travellers going on holidays, business trips or other journeys. The destination, duration, traveller ages and activities matter when choosing cover.

Single Trip

Cover for one journey within the specified dates and geographical area.

Multi-Trip

Cover for several trips during a policy period, usually with a maximum duration for each trip.

Family Travel

An option for eligible family members travelling together. Check individual benefit limits and any shared limits.

What Does It Usually Cover?

  • Eligible emergency medical treatment during the covered journey.
  • Covered loss or delay of checked-in baggage, subject to benefit limits and evidence.
  • Cancellation, curtailment or delay only for reasons and circumstances covered by the plan.
  • Other benefits, such as passport loss or personal liability, where included.

These are general examples. Benefits, eligibility, limits and exclusions depend on the policy you choose.

Key Terms, Simply Explained

Medical Cover Limit
The maximum benefit for eligible medical expenses. Check the currency and any sub-limits.
Deductible
The amount you pay before an applicable claim benefit responds.
Covered Reason
An event specifically accepted under a benefit. A change of mind is not automatically a covered reason to cancel.
Geographical Scope
The destinations included in the policy. Check every country on your itinerary.

What Should You Check?

  • Match your dates and destinations to the policy.
  • Disclose existing health conditions and check how they are treated.
  • Check medical limits, deductibles, trip duration and baggage conditions.
  • Confirm whether adventure activities, work or visa-related requirements need special cover.

Common Limits and Exclusions

  • Expenses outside the covered travel dates or geographical scope.
  • Existing medical conditions unless covered under the selected terms.
  • Adventure sports or high-risk activities unless specifically included.
  • Cancellation for a reason the policy does not cover.

A Simple Example

A delayed suitcase

Your checked-in bag arrives late. A baggage-delay benefit may pay for eligible essentials only after the stated delay threshold and up to its limit. Keep the airline's delay confirmation and purchase receipts.

Illustrative only. This is not a quote or a promise of claim payment.

Details and Documents to Keep Ready

  • Passport, itinerary, traveller details and declared medical history.
  • For claims: relevant tickets, bills and receipts.
  • Airline confirmations, medical reports or police reports depending on the incident.

The insurer may ask for additional information depending on the application or claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does travel cover pay for any cancellation?

No. The cause must meet the selected policy's cancellation conditions. Check whether the costs are eligible and non-refundable.

Are existing illnesses included?

Coverage varies. Some policies exclude them or provide limited emergency cover. Share your medical history and check the exact terms.

Can I extend cover if my trip changes?

Ask the insurer before the policy expires. Extensions depend on its rules, your circumstances and approval.

Who should I contact in an emergency abroad?
